INTER-PROVINCIAL LICENCING AGREEMENTS AND REQUIREMENTS
CANADIAN FREE TRADE AGREEMENT (CFTA)
The Canadian Free Trade Agreement is an intergovernmental trade agreement signed by Canadian Ministers that entered into force on July 1st, 2017. Its objective is to reduce and eliminate, to the extent possible, barriers to the free movement of persons, goods, services, and investments within Canada and to establish an open efficient, and stable domestic market.
Under this agreement, if you have a full, unrestricted licence in another province or territory in Canada, you may be eligible for a streamlined licensing process.
NEW WEST PARTNERSHIP TRADE AGREEMENT (NWPTA)
The New West Partnership Trade Agreement (NWPTA) is an agreement among Alberta, British Columbia and Saskatchewan which allows physicians licensed in one province to be registered in the other, provided they meet that jurisdiction’s registration requirements.
Under the NWPTA, if you have a full licence in Alberta, B.C or Saskatchewan, with LMCC certification and CCFP and/or Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada certification, you may be eligible for a practice permit in participating provinces. The NWPTA does not apply to Limited, Interim, Inactive, Courtesy, Student or Honorary registration.
When applying under the CFTA or NWPTA, you must still complete the full application process for the province or territory in which you are applying for medical registration.
